The NV Extra Brut Blanc de Blancs Latitude 1er Cru is powerful, full-bodied and structured, with a real sense of depth. Smoke, lemon peel, crushed rocks, graphite, menthol, dried pear and chamomile nuances infuse this virile Champagne. Readers looking for a Champagne to drink at the dinner table will adore the Latitude. This is an especially fine edition. Don’t miss it. The current release is based on the 2014 vintage, with 40% reserve wines. As always, the Latitude emerges from the southern part of Vertus, an area that has historically been planted with Pinot Noir, which was considered better suited than Chardonnay because of the clay-rich soils. Disgorged: April 2017. Dosage is 4 grams per liter. (AG)

Cult Wines International Notes:

Larmandier-Bernier is a pillar of the Cote des Blancs, representing a commitment to terroir-driven Champagne that predates the modern grower movement. The estate was formed through the marriage of Philippe Larmandier and Elisabeth Bernier in 1971, but the family’s viticultural roots in Vertus and Cramant stretch back to the 19th century. Under the guidance of Pierre Larmandier and his wife Sophie, the winery transitioned to organic farming in 1992 and full biodynamic certification in 1999. Their philosophy centers on minimal intervention, using indigenous yeasts and long aging to allow the chalky soils of the region to speak clearly through the Chardonnay grape.

The Longitude cuvee is a non-vintage Blanc de Blancs crafted from premier cru vineyards located along the 4th meridian, including Vertus, Oger, Avize, and Cramant. Because it is a non-vintage wine, its profile is shaped by the blending of a base year with a significant proportion of reserve wines kept in large oak foudres. The growing seasons for these components generally benefit from the estate’s late harvesting strategy, which ensures phenolic ripeness and a powerful structure. In recent years, the region has faced warmer summers, which the Larmandiers have managed through biodynamic practices that maintain acidity and freshness. The resulting wine is celebrated for its intense minerality, saline finish, and citrus-driven purity, reflecting a history of technical precision and deep respect for the land.
