Expert levels of integration are going on throughout this bottling, starting with the subtle yet persistent aromas of raspberry, cranberry, potpourri, and light sagebrush that draw in the nose. The palate’s firm texture elevates the cherry compote, citrus rind, and strawberry cream flavors, with a lingering sense of violets painting the corners. This wine will be exciting to watch for years. Drink now-2040. Cellar Selection. (MK)
Cult Wines International Notes:
Sea Smoke Cellars was founded in 1999 by Bob Davids with the singular ambition of producing world-class Pinot Noir from the unique microclimate of the Sta. Rita Hills in Santa Barbara County. Located on the south-facing bluffs of the Santa Ynez River canyon, the estate is defined by the shallow clay soils and the cooling marine fog, or sea smoke, that travels up the valley from the Pacific Ocean. This natural cooling effect allows for a long, slow ripening period that preserves acidity while developing intense flavor complexity. Over the decades, Sea Smoke has become a benchmark for California Pinot Noir, transitioning to organic and biodynamic farming practices to ensure the long-term health of its prized estate vineyard.
The 2023 growing season was characterized by a return to a more traditional, cool-climate rhythm. Following a wet winter that replenished soil moisture, the region experienced a mild spring and a temperate summer without the extreme heat spikes that often challenge California viticulture. This steady, moderate weather allowed the Southing Pinot Noir grapes to achieve full phenolic ripeness while maintaining the vibrant tension and elegant structure the label is known for. The extended hang time resulted in a wine with deep aromatic complexity and refined tannins. As a flagship expression of the estate, the 2023 Southing captures the essence of this exceptional vintage, offering a balance of lush fruit, earthy undertones, and the distinct minerality of the Sea Smoke Vineyard.
