Cult Wines International Notes:

Scarecrow stands as one of the most storied estates in the Napa Valley, rooted in a legacy that bridges Hollywood golden era glamour with legendary viticulture. The estate was founded by J.J. Cohn, a former MGM executive producer who worked on classics like The Wizard of Oz. In 1945, at the urging of his neighbor John Daniel Jr. of Inglenook, Cohn planted eighty acres of Cabernet Sauvignon on St. George rootstock. While most of the valley was later devastated by phylloxera, Cohn’s original plantings survived and are now among the oldest Cabernet vines in North America. These vines, affectionately known as the Old Men, provide the foundation for the winery’s flagship Cabernet Sauvignon, which debuted with the 2003 vintage under the direction of grandson Bret Lopez and winemaker Celia Welch.

The 2023 growing season in the Rutherford AVA was characterized by a long and remarkably cool cycle, often described by vintners as a once-in-a-lifetime vintage. Following a wet winter that replenished soil moisture, the season remained temperate without the typical extreme heat spikes of a California summer. This allowed for an exceptionally long hang time, enabling the grapes to reach full phenolic maturity while preserving bright acidity and fresh aromatics. The resulting 2023 Scarecrow Cabernet exhibits a stunning balance of power and elegance, featuring deep fruit concentration, refined tannins, and the classic dusty minerality synonymous with the Rutherford Bench.
