Tusk…one of Napa’s most exclusive wines and most difficult to acquire.
From Wine Spectator on June 24, 2015:
“Tusk’s exclusivity is not just about the price tag; plenty of expensive Napa Cabernets sell for more than $500 a bottle. This is different, a private club whose members—have to be connected to the owners by no more than two degrees. That means only friends of Philippe Melka, Tim Martin and Michael Uytengsu, and their friends, are allowed to join the mailing list. No exceptions.
Cult Wines International Notes:
Born from the vision of founders Michael Uytengsu, Tim Martin, and master winemaker Philippe Melka, Tusk Estates was established in 2008 as an ultra-boutique Napa Valley project focused on luxury and exclusivity. The “L’Orange” label, introduced with the 2016 vintage, takes its name from the signature orange accent in Tusk’s otherwise monochrome branding, symbolizing warmth and creative expression. While the flagship Tusk Cabernet is a singular expression of Oakville terroir, L’Orange is a proprietary Bordeaux-style blend—typically led by Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot—crafted to offer a more approachable, plush texture in its youth while maintaining the same pedigree and aging potential as the estate’s primary wine.
The 2022 vintage in Napa Valley was defined by a dramatic “tale of two harvests.” The growing season began under ideal conditions with a mild spring and a temperate summer that allowed for steady canopy growth and flavor development. However, the trajectory shifted during a historic Labor Day heatwave, where temperatures soared above 110°F. For the 2022 L’Orange, this extreme event necessitated a precise, rapid harvest; winemakers like Melka had to make split-second decisions to pick fruit before the heat could dehydrate the berries. The resulting wine is a testament to resilient viticulture, characterized by an “ink-like” density and immense energy. It balances the opulence of the hot vintage with refined notes of chocolate-covered cherry, cassis, and espresso, underpinned by a distinct mineral backbone of crushed granite.
