Cult Wines International Notes:
Nestled against the Mayacamas Mountains in Rutherford, Scarecrow Vineyards boasts a rich history. Founded by movie executive J.J. Cohn as a family retreat, the estate includes some of Napa Valley’s oldest vines, planted in 1945 at the behest of neighbor John Daniels (Inglenook).
Today, owned by Bret Lopez, grandson of J.J. Cohn, Scarecrow produces renowned Cabernet Sauvignon. A portion of the vineyard, including the historic “Old Men” vines on St. George rootstock, is dry-farmed, while modern viticulture practices are employed elsewhere. Renowned winemaker Celia Welch oversees production, with acclaimed viticulturist Mike Wolf managing vineyard operations.
Scarecrow releases a limited portfolio of wines, including the flagship Scarecrow and M. Étain. The estate also occasionally produces the highly sought-after Toto’s Opium Dream, crafted from the “Old Men” vines and often offered as a rare auction lot
