Another ripe, powerful wine from this estate that ticks all the right boxes, the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve reveals a dense purple hue as well as sumptuous notes of blackcurrant, black cherry liqueur, spicy oak, and graphite, with a Graves-like smoky, scorched earth character. It’s full-bodied, deep, layered, incredibly concentrated, and has a blockbuster finish. Drink this awesome Cabernet over the coming two decades.

Cult Wines International Notes:

Lewis Cellars was founded in 1992 by Randy Lewis, a former professional Indy car driver, and his wife Debbie. Inspired by his time racing on the Formula 3 circuit in Europe—where he fell in love with local wines—Randy transitioned from the high-speed world of the Indianapolis 500 to the meticulous craft of Napa Valley winemaking. The winery quickly gained a reputation for a “pedal-to-the-metal” style, characterized by bold, opulent, and fruit-forward profiles that earned significant critical acclaim, including Wine Spectator’s “Wine of the Year” in 2016. Though the winery was acquired by The Wonderful Company in 2021, the Lewis family remains at the helm of leadership, ensuring that the brand’s signature power and artisanal, hands-on approach continue to define every bottle.

The 2021 vintage in Napa Valley is widely regarded as a modern classic, marked by a return to exceptional quality following the challenges of the previous year. A second consecutive year of drought led to significantly lower yields and small, thick-skinned berries, which translated into profound concentration and color in the cellar. The growing season was mercifully steady, with a mild spring and a summer devoid of the extreme heat spikes seen in 2022. This allowed the Cabernet Sauvignon fruit to reach optimal phenolic ripeness with a balance of vibrant acidity and structural depth. The 2021 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon is a blockbuster expression of this “redemption” year, delivering an obsidian-dark profile with layers of crushed currants, huckleberry, and espresso. It balances the estate’s trademark plushness with the vintage’s refined, “Old Masters” texture and fine-grained tannins.
