The 2020 Grenache Eleven Confessions Vineyard is another absolutely heavenly wine from this estate, and it’s easily one of the top wines from California in 2020. Darker berries, tapenade, roasted herbs, and a bloody, iron-like character define the aromatics, and it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a deep, stacked mid-palate, velvety tannins, and a great, great finish. It reminds me of a Châteauneuf du Pape from the likes of Jean-Paul Daumen and is a tour de force in Grenache that I wish every reader could taste. Coming from a hot growing season, this beauty is powerful and full throttle, yet like all of Manfred’s wines, it holds onto a sense of purity, balance, and elegance that’s something to behold. Drink bottles any time over the coming two decades. The blend is 82% Grenache, 13% Syrah, 3% Petite Sirah, and the rest Gelber Muskateller, fermented with 27% whole clusters, and aged 38 months in 41% new French oak.

Another stellar wine in this range, the 2020 Grenache Eleven Confessions Vineyard is every bit as compelling as it was from barrel. A wine of exquisite aromatic presence and nuance, the 2020 is all class. It shows all the natural richness that is such a signature here while retaining gorgeous, open-knit aromatics that resonate off a rich core of fruit. Raspberry and pomegranate open first, followed by exotic, tropical fruit accents that build in the glass. This is such a distinctive wine shaped by a touch of Gelber Muskateller in the blend that adds flair. The blend is 82% Grenache, 12.1% Syrah, 3.3% Petite Sirah and 1.6% Gelber Muskateller, all from Eleven Confessions. (AG)

One of those singular, powerhouse wines that will stop anyone in their tracks (well, its stopped me anyways), the 2020 Syrah Eleven Confessions Vineyard offers an insane nose of bloody red and blue fruits, ground pepper, graphite, cured meats, and baking spices, with some classic Sta. Rita Hills marine/salty sea breeze-like nuances. With a dense, powerful mouthfeel, full-bodied aromas and flavors, massive fruit, and building tannins, this beauty is going to benefit from 2-4 years in the cellar and blow you away over the following two decades. It reminds me of the 2005 Nail in my Cranium with its massive, powerful, yet flawlessly balanced style, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see this evolve along the same trajectory as that wine. The 2020 is 84% Syrah, 12% Grenache, and the rest Petite Sirah and white varieties, fermented with one quarter whole clusters and aged 38 months in 58% new oak.

The 2020 Syrah Eleven Confessions Vineyard is a dark, exotic beauty. Rich, sumptuous and layered in the glass, the 2020 is classic Sine Qua Non from start to finish. Silky tannins wrap around a core of inky red/purplish fruit, lavender, rose petal and mint, building into a stunning crescendo of aromas, flavors and textures. What a wine. The blend is 84% Syrah, 11.5% Grenache, 2.3% Petite Sirah and 2.2% Viognier and Golden Muskateller. (AG)

Cult Wines International Notes:

Since its inception in 1994, Sine Qua Non has remained one of the most provocative and sought-after names in the world of fine wine, defined by the singular vision of Manfred and Elaine Krankl. Operating with a philosophy that rejects the status quo, the winery is famous for never repeating a wine name or label artwork, ensuring that every vintage is a unique, collectible piece of history. The Eleven Confessions Vineyard, located in the cool-climate Sta. Rita Hills, serves as the soul of their estate program. This high-density vineyard is characterized by its sandy loam soils and a steady maritime influence, which provides the long, slow ripening period necessary to achieve the “ethereal power” and aromatic complexity that have become the hallmarks of the Krankl’s Rhone-style blends.

The 2020 vintage in the Central Coast was a season defined by resilience and meticulous timing. While much of California faced historic heatwaves and wildfire challenges, the Eleven Confessions Vineyard benefited significantly from its proximity to the Pacific Ocean, where the coastal fog and consistent winds acted as a natural air conditioner. This climate allowed the Syrah and Grenache to maintain their vibrant acidity despite the warm spikes seen elsewhere in the state. The 2020 Assorted Box Set, featuring both the Syrah and Grenache from this estate site, showcases a remarkable depth of fruit and a savory, mineral core. These wines underwent extended barrel aging in a high percentage of new French oak, resulting in a profile that balances opulent notes of blackberry liqueur and cracked black pepper with a structured, velvety finish that reflects the idiosyncratic excellence of the Sta. Rita Hills.
