Floral and bright cherry, blueberry and blackberry flavors are framed by sandalwood and toasty oak elements. A mix of elegance and power, the aromas should open up in a few years and more complexity emerge on the palate. Fine iron-tinged length. (BS)

Cult Wines International Notes:

Established in 1999, Domaine de la Vougeraie is a relatively modern powerhouse in Burgundy, formed by the Boisset family through the consolidation of several historic estate holdings. The domaine is rooted in a philosophy of meticulous organic and biodynamic viticulture, achieving Demeter certification to ensure that each parcel reflects its specific “climat” with absolute purity. Their crown jewel within the Clos de Vougeot consists of several prime plots totaling over one hectare, primarily situated in the “Grand Maupertui” and “Petit Maupertui” sections. These areas, located in the upper and mid-slope of the historic walled vineyard, are prized for their well-drained, pebble-strewn limestone soils, which historically produce wines of greater elegance and structural definition than the heavier clay soils found at the bottom of the Clos.

The 2018 vintage in the Côte de Nuits is remembered as a year of abundance and exceptional solar intensity, following a remarkably warm and dry summer. This resulted in a growing season that moved at a rapid pace, leading to one of the earliest harvests in recent Burgundian history. For Domaine de la Vougeraie, the challenge of 2018 was capturing the natural opulence of the fruit while maintaining the tension and “mineral” core essential to Grand Cru Burgundy. The 2018 Clos de Vougeot successfully navigates this balance, offering a profound aromatic profile of dark cherries, wilted roses, and forest floor. On the palate, the wine is expansive and broad-shouldered, displaying the concentrated “muscle” of the vintage, yet it is framed by remarkably fine-grained tannins and a persistent limestone-driven finish that promises decades of evolution.
