Cult Wines International Notes:

Domaine de l’Arlot holds a unique position in the Côte de Nuits, historically centered around its historic monopole vineyards in Nuits-Saint-Georges. Founded in the late 18th century and later revitalized under the ownership of AXA Millésimes in 1987, the Domaine became a pioneer of organic and biodynamic viticulture in Burgundy under the influential guidance of Jean-Pierre de Smet. While famous for its Nuits-Saint-Georges estates, the Domaine’s crown jewel is its tiny 0.25-hectare holding within the legendary Romanée-Saint-Vivant Grand Cru. These vines, situated in the “Le Clos des Quatre Journaux” climat, sit on deep, clay-rich limestone soils that produce a wine of immense aromatic complexity and silkiness. By 2014, the winemaking transition to Christian Seely and Géraldine Godot further refined the estate’s signature style of partial whole-cluster fermentation, emphasizing the ethereal elegance and “lace-like” precision that defines this specific Vosne-Romanée terroir.

The 2014 vintage in Burgundy is celebrated as a “winemaker’s year,” characterized by a return to a classic, terroir-driven profile after several turbulent seasons. The growing year began with a warm, dry spring that led to an early and successful flowering, but a violent hailstorm in June and a cool, damp August initially threatened the crop’s potential. Fortunately, a “miracle” September brought consistent north winds and sunny days, which concentrated the sugars and preserved a vibrant, crystalline acidity. For the 2014 Romanée-Saint-Vivant, this resulted in a Grand Cru of remarkable transparency and energy. The wine displays the hallmark 2014 freshness, offering a sophisticated bouquet of crushed rose petals, wild raspberry, and exotic spices. On the palate, the tannins are exceptionally fine-grained, providing a sturdy yet supple framework for the mineral-driven finish, marking it as a vintage of balance and great longevity.
