Ratings & Tasting Notes:

97 points — Jasper Morris (Inside Burgundy, November 2021)
Morris notes the wine had been in a difficult place to taste a year earlier from barrel. Quite a full dark purple, the fruit notably darker on the nose with more power than detail at first sniff, some blacker fruit alongside crushed strawberry. It builds beautifully across the palate, certainly sensual, and he is confident the refined detail he looks for in Romanée-St-Vivant will come later. Very light coffee notes, with strawberries strengthening on the nose. Quite firm tannins at this stage, but excellent length.

96 points — Decanter (February 2016)
Delicious savoury notes alongside red fruit and candied citrus peel, with an extremely polished texture and a spicy finish. The reviewer calls it a wine of great class and harmony that is often overlooked because this legendary estate has so many stars in its stable.

95 points — Burghound (Allen Meadows, January 2017)
A deft but not invisible application of wood sets off an airy, cool and strikingly elegant nose composed of red and dark currant, a wide range of floral and spice elements and Asian-style tea scents. The refined, caressing middle-weight flavours possess a sleek, cool mouthfeel while retaining good definition across a firm but well-balanced and sneaky long finish, which Meadows notes exhibits a little less finesse than usual even if it remains quite fine.

95 points — Wine Advocate (Neal Martin, February 2017)
Martin records the picking on 21, 22 and 23 September, cropped at 31.6 hectolitres per hectare. He finds a distinctly earthy bouquet that leads into dark woods — vivacious red berry fruit augmented by something autumnal, brown leaves on an October morning, moss and tree bark — which with continued aeration give way to pure floral aromas. The palate is very precise on entry, orange rind and mandarin complementing crushed strawberry and raspberry, with a touch of spice toward the finish exerting a gentle yet insistent grip in the manner of Richebourg. The persistence is very impressive, and it blossoms in the glass until, in his words, you have utterly succumbed to its charms.

Cult Wines International Notes:

Domaine de la Romanée-Conti farms its holdings from Vosne-Romanée under long-established biodynamic practice, at yields among the lowest in Burgundy. It is the largest owner of Romanée-St-Vivant, holding just over five of the climat’s nine hectares — the former Marey-Monge parcel, which the domaine leased from 1966 and bought outright in 1988. The cru sits lowest on the slope of the great Vosne grand crus, and its wine is correspondingly the most perfumed and least muscular in the cellar: lighter-framed, floral, silken, and for many drinkers the most purely elegant thing the domaine makes.

2014 tested Burgundy’s growers before rewarding them. A cool, uneven flowering, summer hail and pressure from spotted-wing drosophila made for an anxious season until a dry, breezy September restored the crop’s health, giving a vintage of freshness, tension and classical mid-weight proportions rather than opulence. The domaine picked its Romanée-St-Vivant on 21, 22 and 23 September at 31.6 hectolitres per hectare. The wine is darker-fruited than usual for the cru, with crushed strawberry, raspberry, red and dark currant and black fruit over violet, Asian tea, orange rind, mandarin, candied citrus peel, coffee, moss and autumn leaves. The texture is polished and caressing, cool and sleek in the mid-palate, its firm tannins carrying a long, spicy finish with a gentle but insistent grip. It blossoms markedly with air, and reviewers agree its refinement is still arriving.

The individual bottle number has been deliberately masked in our photographs. Every DRC bottle carries a unique serial number, and published images of that number are routinely harvested by fraudsters — both to produce convincing counterfeits and to advertise wine which a fraudulent seller doesn’t possess. Masking this number also protects its eventual owner from similar fraud. The number is fully intact on the label and unobscured on the bottle itself. If requested, unmasked photos can be provided to the buyer after purchase and prior to shipping.
