Cult Wines International Notes:
Established in 1861, Charles Krug holds the distinction of being the oldest commercial winery in Napa Valley, serving as a foundational pillar of California’s viticultural heritage. The estate’s modern legacy began in 1943 when Cesare and Rosa Mondavi purchased the property, eventually passing stewardship to their sons, Peter and Robert. Under the long-term leadership of Peter Mondavi Sr., the winery became a pioneer in revolutionary techniques, such as cold fermentation and the use of French oak barrels, which transformed the quality of Napa Valley Cabernet. Today, the fourth generation of the Peter Mondavi family continues this “200-year plan” of stewardship, focusing on sustainable farming across their 400 acres of prime estate vineyards, particularly within the rocky, well-drained soils of the Yountville and St. Helena AVAs.
The 2014 vintage is celebrated as the final chapter of a trio of “dream” seasons in Napa Valley, characterized by a long, warm, and remarkably consistent growing cycle. Despite being a drought year, a wet February and March provided just enough deep-soil moisture to sustain the vines through a warm spring that led to an early budbreak. The summer months remained steady without any major heat spikes, allowing the Cabernet Sauvignon grapes to reach a state of “structural precision” with perfectly polymerized tannins and concentrated fruit flavors. Harvested under ideal conditions, the 2014 Peter Mondavi Family Cabernet Sauvignon exhibits a sophisticated balance of power and elegance. The wine leads with classic aromas of black cherry, roasted espresso, and dried herbs, supported by a backbone of refined tannins and a crushed-rock minerality that reflects the historic terroir of the estate.
