An utterly prodigious effort that would most likely be the wine of the vintage if not for its big brother, the 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Galitzine Vineyard comes all from Red Mountain and was raised in 100% new French oak. Revealing a healthy ruby/purple color and classic notes of sage brush, graphite, black cherries, currants and chocolate, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness; building, present, yet ripe and polished tannin; perfect integration of its fruit, alcohol and oak; and awesome length. This is a powerhouse Cabernet Sauvignon that still holds onto a sense of elegance and finesse. Forget it for 4-5 years and drink bottles over the following two decades. (JD)

Cult Wines International Notes:

The 2013 Quilceda Creek Galitzine Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon is a landmark release that winemaker Paul Golitzin describes as a “benchmark” for the estate. Sourced from the high-density Galitzine Vineyard in the Red Mountain AVA—with a small 5% addition from the Wallula Vineyard—this wine was forged in a growing season characterized by a warm spring and a dry, hot autumn, allowing for perfect phenolic ripeness. It is often described as a “powerhouse” that manages to retain a level of elegance and finesse comparable to its “big brother,” the Columbia Valley flagship.

In the glass, the 2013 vintage reveals a deep ruby/purple hue and a complex aromatic profile of blackberry, cassis, and black cherry, accented by sophisticated notes of sweet pipe tobacco, sagebrush, and graphite. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and “voluptuous,” featuring the building, polished tannins characteristic of Red Mountain. Layers of Belgian dark chocolate, anise, and mocha are supported by a distinct mineral edge and a surprising “inner-mouth perfume.” Aged for 20 months in 100% new French oak, the 2013 Galitzine earned critical acclaim, including a 98-point score from The Wine Advocate, with reviewers noting its incredible energy and “3-D” texture. While it is reaching a beautiful drinking peak now, its structural integrity ensures it will continue to evolve gracefully through 2036.
