Domaine des Comtes Lafon stands among the most revered names in white Burgundy, farming roughly 14 hectares across Meursault, Volnay, Monthélie, and Chassagne-Montrachet, entirely under biodynamic cultivation. The domaine has been in the Lafon family since 1865, with Dominique Lafon taking the reins in 1985 and building the estate’s reputation as one of the most meticulous, terroir-focused producers in the region. The domaine’s tiny holding in Le Montrachet places it alongside legendary neighbors like Domaine de la Romanée-Conti and Domaine Leflaive as one of the handful of producers permitted to bottle wine from this most prestigious of all white wine vineyards.

The 2013 growing season in Burgundy was one of the most difficult and complicated in recent memory. A cold, wet spring delayed flowering and reduced potential yields, and a violent hailstorm tore through the Côte de Beaune on July 23rd, devastating vineyards from Meursault to Corton. Harvest was pushed unusually late into October, the latest in a generation. The result was an extremely scarce, low-yielding vintage — this particular bottling saw barely four and a half barrels produced — but critics found that the surviving fruit, concentrated by such punishing conditions, produced wines of real intensity and mineral drive, if built for patient, long-term cellaring rather than early drinking.
