Ratings & Tasting Notes:

Critic Consensus

An incredibly classic, nostalgic reflection of late-90s Napa winemaking, this vintage offers a highly reliable peek into the region’s historic white wine foundations. The bouquet displays a soft maturity, dominated by dried golden apples, preserved white peaches, and an overarching, sweet oak framing. The full-bodied palate has taken on a smooth, rounded texture over time, offering flavors of soft pear and subtle vanilla custard before concluding with a clean, mineral-driven finish.

Cult Wines International Notes:

Cakebread Cellars stands as one of the ultimate, pioneering benchmarks of Napa Valley luxury, originally founded in 1973 by Jack and Dolores Cakebread in the heart of Rutherford. Renowned for its iconic, immediate crowd-pleasing style, the estate played a massive role in establishing Napa Valley Chardonnay as a world-class global phenomenon. While their flagship style is famous for its rich, generous fruit presence, it achieves its signature complexity by anchoring its fruit primarily in the cool-climate Carneros AVA at the southernmost tip of the valley. Swept by thick morning fogs and chilly breezes from the San Pablo Bay, this unique terroir forces an exceptionally long growing season, allowing the grapes to fully develop intense varietal character while naturally retaining a vital, structuring acidity.

The 1998 growing season in Napa Valley is historic for its intense, high-stakes weather patterns, universally remembered by vintners as an incredibly cool, rain-soaked roller coaster. An uncommonly wet, prolonged winter extended deep into spring, delaying budbreak and flower development across the entire valley. A unusually cool summer followed, requiring aggressive, meticulous canopy management to ensure the fruit received maximum sunlight exposure to ripen. Fortunately, a warm, golden spike of late-autumn sun saved the vintage in October, giving Cakebread’s viticultural team a tight window to harvest pristine, low-yielding clusters with a beautifully elevated natural acidity. The juice was whole-cluster pressed and barrel-fermented in French oak barriques, followed by an elegant sur lie (yeast lees) aging program featuring periodic stirring to build a creamy texture. The 1998 Chardonnay emerged from this cool vintage with an old-school structure, marrying a deep golden apple and pear profile with a broad, buttery mouthfeel and a long, vanilla-spiced finish.
