Ratings & Tasting Notes:
97 points Wine Spectator
This is balanced and refined, layered and beautiful, originally earning the coveted title of Wine Spectator’s #1 Wine of the Year in 2000. It unfurls with complex aromas of dark currants, Christmas cake, fresh mint, and warming exotic spices. On the palate, it remains exceptionally full-bodied, structured by ultrafine, seamless tannins that lead into a remarkably long, polished finish. James Suckling, December 2007
96 points Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
The sensational, opaque blue/purple-colored 1997 exhibits a complex nose of cedar, spice box, cassis, and subtle oak. With yields of only 30 hectoliters per hectare, and malolactic fermentation completely in barrel, this wine reveals extraordinary concentration and a thick, viscous texture, yet carries absolutely no sense of heaviness or ponderousness. “If a first-growth Pauillac were made in Tuscany, this would be it!” Robert Parker, February 2000
96 points Antonio Galloni (Vinous)
The 1997 Solaia is awesome. Sweet, open aromatics lead into a rich, full-bodied expression of dark cherries, plums, menthol, and sweet spices. This sensual, full-bodied wine remains incredibly youthful and full of life—it is a truly great Solaia that emphasizes textbook structural depth and textual richness. Antonio Galloni, January 2009
Cult Wines International Notes:
Solaia stands as one of the ultimate, globally revered crown jewels of the legendary Marchesi Antinori winemaking dynasty, originally created in 1978 as an avant-garde, ultra-premium single-vineyard cuvée. Meaning “the sunny one,” Solaia is named after a perfectly exposed, 20-hectare hillside plot situated 1,300 feet above sea level at the Tignanello estate in the heart of Chianti Classico. While its famous sibling Tignanello relies primarily on local Sangiovese, Solaia flips the script, operating as a majestic, Cabernet-dominant powerhouse designed to rival the finest Bordeaux First Growths. The 1997 release showcases the estate’s legendary, classic composition, precisely weaving 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Sangiovese, and 5% Cabernet Franc sourced entirely from the vineyard’s highly unique limestone, marl, and alberese soils.
The 1997 growing season in Tuscany is universally revered as one of the single greatest, most legendary, and naturally concentrated vintages of the 20th century—serving as the absolute gold standard for modern Italian winemaking. Following a mild winter, an uncommonly warm, early spring prompted an early budbreak, which was followed by an exceptionally long, hot, and sunny summer with virtually zero climatic spikes. This flawless weather allowed the estate’s low-yielding blocks to achieve a historic level of phenolic maturity, producing tiny, thick-skinned berries packed with immense sugar concentration and perfectly ripe tannins. The juice underwent a meticulous vinification program under winemaker Renzo Cotarella, including full malolactic fermentation directly inside new oak barrels. The wine was then aged for 14 months in 100% new French oak barriques before being bottled completely unfined and unfiltered.
At nearly three decades of bottle age, the 1997 Solaia stands at a glorious, triumphant peak of maturity. It seamlessly marries a voluptuous, heady bouquet of baked black plums, kirsch, Maraschino cherries, cigar box, and crushed pine needles with an ultra-smooth, velvety mouthfeel. Supported by perfectly melted, satin-like tannins and an enduring, luxurious finish laced with dark chocolate and allspice, this legendary vintage is a mandatory bucket-list acquisition for serious collectors of historic Super Tuscan royalty.
