Cult Wines International Notes:

Marchesi Antinori stands as an unrivaled titan of Italian winemaking, boasting over six centuries and twenty-six generations of uninterrupted heritage. Situated in the heart of Chianti Classico on sun-drenched, high-altitude slopes rich in limestone, marl, and alberese rock, the historic Tignanello estate is famous for birthing a wine that fundamentally redefined modern Italian viticulture. First released in the early 1970s by Marchese Piero Antinori and legendary enologist Giacomo Tachis, Tignanello broke centuries of strict regional dogma by removing white grapes, introducing small French oak barrique aging, and blending international Cabernet into Sangiovese. For the 1996 vintage, the estate assembled its classic, benchmark composition favoring 80% Sangiovese alongside 15% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc.

The 1996 growing season across central Tuscany was a classic, cooler-toned campaign that built wines of striking structural focus, high acidity, and exceptional longevity. Following an ideal, warm spring that kicked off a healthy and uniform budbreak, the summer turned slightly cooler than average, allowing for a long, extended maturation phase without the risk of over-ripening or sugar spikes. Late September brought intermittent rains, but the well-draining, rocky hillside soils of the Tignanello vineyard prevented water retention, allowing the estate’s viticultural team to patiently harvest ripe, thick-skinned fruit with excellent phenolic development and firm natural acidity. The hand-picked grapes were vinified separately in temperature-controlled tanks before aging for approximately 12 to 14 months in French and Hungarian oak barriques, followed by extended bottle rest prior to release.

At thirty years of age, the 1996 Marchesi Antinori Tignanello has reached a beautifully mature, highly aristocratic drinking window. The youthful primary dark cherries have gracefully evolved into a complex, savory bouquet of cured leather, dried black currants, pipe tobacco, graphite, and crushed dried herbs. On the palate, the wine demonstrates classic 1996 tension and nerve; the once-firm tannins have completely resolved into a fine, powdery matrix, perfectly carried by a persistent, mouthwatering vein of Tuscan acidity. This textbook, fully mature vintage offers an exceptional, food-friendly experience for serious collectors seeking an authentic, traditional Super Tuscan icon.
