Tasting Notes:
97 points Decanter:
“The year began with early heat and a precocious budbreak, and growers were struck by frost in April. Flowering was disrupted by poor weather in June, further limiting yields. The growing season, however, was scorching hot and sunny. Although the grapes seemed lush, rich and approachable at an early age, the best examples have held well, and the bottle tasted in May 2022 was more youthful than many in the tasting. There was ripe apple fruit, a silky, supple texture, and impressive length. Drinking now, but there is potential for additional ageing. (CC)” (01/2022)
94 points John Gilman:
“I was completely smitten by the refined elegance and ethereal character of the 1989 Comtes de Champagne, as I often associate wines from this vintage with a bit more muscle and a bit less grace than what is delivered by this glorious bottle. The bouquet is a deep and stunning mélange of honeyed almonds, fresh-baked bread just out of the oven, roasted peaches, wheat toast, lovely, chalky minerality and a delicate note of Chablis-like straw. On the palate the wine is medium-full, round and utterly pure, with great length and focus, refined mousse, bright acids and superb length and grip on the very complex and classy finish. Just another routine example of brilliance from the Comtes de Champagne bottling. ” (05/2008)
