Cult Wines International Notes:
Louis Jadot was founded in 1859 by Louis Henry Denis Jadot, though the family’s roots in the Beaune region of Burgundy date back even further to the purchase of the Clos des Ursules in 1826. For generations, the house has maintained a reputation for balancing the traditions of a family estate with the reach of a major negociant, focusing on expressing the specific terroir of Burgundy. By the time the 1989 vintage was produced, the winery was under the direction of the Gagey family and the esteemed winemaker Jacques Lardiere, who was known for his non-interventionist approach and ability to craft wines with exceptional longevity.
The 1989 growing season in Burgundy is remembered as one of the most successful and precocious of the late twentieth century. It was characterized by an unusually warm and early spring, which led to an early flowering. The summer months remained consistently hot and dry, providing ideal conditions for the grapes to reach high levels of maturity and sugar concentration. While the heat was intense, the Chardonnay vines managed to retain enough acidity to produce wines that were both opulent and structured. Harvesting for the white wines began significantly earlier than usual, often in early September, to capture the balance between the richness of the fruit and the necessary freshness. This resulted in a Bourgogne Chardonnay that reflects the warmth of the year through its golden hue and concentrated fruit profile, supported by the historical winemaking expertise of the Jadot cellars.
