Far Niente was established in 1885 by John Benson, a relative of the famous painter Winslow Homer. Benson oversaw the construction of a gravity-flow winery in Oakville, designed to produce world-class wines until the onset of Prohibition forced the estate into a long period of dormancy. For sixty years, the stone building sat abandoned and shrouded in ivy until Gil and Beth Nickel purchased the property in 1979. They spent three years meticulously restoring the historic structure to its former glory, focusing exclusively on Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon. By the time the 1988 vintage was produced, Far Niente had reclaimed its reputation as a benchmark producer of Napa Valley Chardonnay, defined by an elegant, non-malolactic style that emphasized longevity and bright acidity.

The 1988 growing season in Napa Valley was characterized by its consistency and a relatively long, cool duration compared to the warmer years that preceded it. Following a dry winter, the spring arrived with mild temperatures that allowed for a successful bloom and fruit set. A temperate summer followed, devoid of the extreme heat spikes that can often lead to over-ripeness or sugar spikes. This steady pace allowed the Chardonnay grapes to develop complex phenolic maturity while maintaining high natural acidity. Harvest took place under ideal conditions, yielding fruit with excellent balance and concentrated flavors.
