(Montrachet- Domaine Ramonet) The decade of the 1980s at Domaine Ramonet was one of the most remarkable “hot streaks” that any white Burgundy-producing domaine has ever been on, and the ’86 Montrachet is an absolutely magical wine that transcends the general tenets of this vintage. The bouquet is flat out stunning at age thirty-one, soaring from the glass in a vibrant blend of apple, passion fruit, complex, chalky minerality, orange oil, a faint whiff of peppermint, gentle vanillin oak and a touch of exotic spiced meatiness in the upper register. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied and razor-sharp, with a bottomless core of fruit, superb soil signature, impeccable focus and balance and a very, very long, complex and racy finish. This majestic wine is at its absolute apogee, but will continue to dazzle for decades and decades to come. Brilliant juice. Drink between 2017-2040.

I have been fortunate enough to have this wine at several tastings where a number of tasters gave it perfect scores. Certainly it was stunning when I tasted it in August. With a bold, even dramatic nose of buttered popcorn, honeyed apples, oranges, and toasty new oak, its velvety, viscous, chewy texture is crammed with sweet, expansive Chardonnay fruit. There is barely enough acidity to hold everything together, and the finish is explosively long, rich, and buttery. (RP)

Two 1986 Montrachets provided fascinating contrasts. The Domaine de la Romanée-Conti impressed for its intensity and depth, but I gave an edge to the Ramonet for its sheer energy, minerality and vibrancy, all of which elevate it to the pantheon of immortal, heroic wines. (AG)
Cult Wines International Notes:
The 1986 Domaine Ramonet Montrachet Grand Cru is a legendary bottling from an estate that defines the pinnacle of Chassagne-Montrachet. The domaine’s ascent to global fame began with the tireless work of Pierre Ramonet, who started purchasing land in the 1920s and famously arrived at the gates of the Montrachet vineyard with gold coins to secure his initial parcel. By the mid-1980s, the transition of leadership to his grandsons, Noël and Jean-Claude, was underway, ensuring the continuation of the family’s signature style: a rare combination of power, “spearmint” freshness, and incredible structural tension. Their Montrachet parcel, situated on the Chassagne side of the vineyard, is prized for its mid-slope location and perfect drainage, producing a wine that is widely considered one of the most profound expressions of Chardonnay in the world.
The 1986 growing season in Burgundy was a year that rewarded the meticulous and the brave, characterized by a fluctuating climate that ultimately favored the highest quality terroirs. A cool spring delayed the start of the season, but a warm, stable summer allowed for a steady accumulation of sugars and flavor precursors. While the harvest was threatened by late-season rains, the Ramonet family’s rigorous vineyard management and late picking allowed the fruit to reach exceptional phenolic maturity. The 1986 vintage is celebrated for its remarkable concentration and an “aristocratic” acidity that has provided this Montrachet with an almost immortal lifespan. It remains a benchmark vintage for the domaine, showcasing a perfect marriage of richness and mineral nerve.
