Cult Wines International Notes:

Tommasi is one of Valpolicella’s largest and most respected producers, founded in 1902 and still run today by the fourth generation of the Tommasi family. The estate is based in Pedemonte, one of the five historic villages that make up the Valpolicella Classico zone, and has long been considered a benchmark producer for traditional, well-balanced Amarone in a region known for wide stylistic variation between houses.

1985 is widely regarded as an excellent vintage for Amarone della Valpolicella, rated four stars on established regional vintage charts and frequently cited alongside 1988 and 1990 as one of the standout years of that era — a run of vintages that set the bar many later years were measured against. Amarones from this period are prized for their combination of power and elegance, built on Valpolicella’s traditional appassimento drying process, where hand-selected grapes are dried for months before pressing to concentrate flavor and structure. Now at roughly four decades of age, a well-stored bottle from this vintage should be entering a graceful, fully mature drinking window — rich, complex, and softened by considerable bottle age.
