Cult Wines International Notes:

Noirot-Carriere was a historic, traditional negociant-eleveur based in Dijon, Burgundy. Active primarily throughout the 20th century, the house sourced and bottled classic regional wines, offering a genuine snapshot of traditional Burgundian viticulture. Historical negociants like Noirot-Carriere played a crucial role in bringing terroir-driven wines to market before the modern era of widespread estate bottling. Their Savigny-les-Beaune reflects this heritage, originating from a Cote de Beaune village prized for producing elegant, slightly rustic, and deeply aromatic Pinot Noirs with exceptional aging potential.

Savigny-lès-Beaune is a charming and significant wine-producing village located in the heart of the Côte de Beaune, just a few kilometers northwest of the iconic town of Beaune. Nestled within a sheltered valley along the Côte d’Or escarpment, the vineyards here enjoy a unique V-shaped geography carved by the Rhoin river. This varied topography, spanning altitudes of 220 to 360 meters, creates a rich mosaic of micro-terroirs that allows for diverse expressions of Pinot Noir and, to a lesser extent, Chardonnay.

The 1985 growing season is widely celebrated as one of the most magnificent and charming vintages of the 1980s for red Burgundy. The year began ominously with a brutally cold winter, featuring severe frosts that damaged vines in lower-lying areas. However, the surviving vines enjoyed a remarkably smooth spring followed by a hot, sunny, and dry summer. These pristine weather conditions continued flawlessly through the September harvest, allowing the Pinot Noir to achieve perfect phenolic maturity with virtually no disease pressure. The resulting 1985 red Burgundies are legendary for their opulent fruit, supple tannins, and striking balance. Even at the village level, the 1985s possess incredible structural integrity, allowing them to evolve gracefully into profound, mature wines decades after their release.
