Cult Wines International Notes:
Chateau Clarke, located in the Listrac-Medoc appellation of Bordeaux, carries a rich history that took a pivotal turn in 1973 when Baron Edmond de Rothschild purchased the estate. Named after the Irish family who acquired the property in 1818, the estate had fallen into a state of neglect before the Rothschild family committed to a total restoration. This involved completely replanting the vineyards and modernizing the winemaking facilities to reflect the Baron’s vision of producing world-class wines outside the more famous communal appellations. By the time the 1983 vintage was produced, the estate was beginning to see the fruits of these intensive labors, establishing itself as a flagship for Listrac.
The 1983 growing season in Bordeaux was characterized by a hot, humid summer that provided a significant contrast to the more famous 1982 vintage. While the region faced some pressure from rot due to the humidity, estates like Chateau Clarke that practiced diligent vineyard management were able to harvest healthy fruit. The autumn turned exceptionally warm and dry, allowing the grapes to reach excellent levels of ripeness and concentration. For the Listrac-Medoc region, which often features cooler clay-limestone soils, this heat was particularly beneficial for the Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon vines. The resulting wine is known for its structural integrity, balance, and the classic earthy refinement typical of the Medoc’s left bank during a successful warm-weather year.
