Garnet rim. A big, rich, ripe, generous yet tannic claret with fragrant tar cedar, ripe cassis and tobacco flavors. Not ready yet, but showing good evolution. Should be a lovely, classic wine in a few years, but can be drunk now.–Gruaud-Larose vertical. (Feb-1991)
Cult Wines International Notes:
Château Gruaud Larose is a highly respected Second Growth estate located in the Saint-Julien appellation of Bordeaux. Its history dates back to 1725, but it was the knight Joseph Stanislas Gruaud and Joseph Sebastian de La Rose who, in the late 18th century, solidified the estate and gave it its iconic name. Over the centuries, the property was at one point divided into two separate châteaux before being reunited by the Cordier family in 1935. Today, it is owned by the Taillan Group, which has invested significantly in the vineyards.
Known for its classic Saint-Julien style, Gruaud Larose wines are a blend primarily of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. They are celebrated for their powerful yet elegant character, combining concentration with purity. The wines often exhibit notes of blackcurrant, cedar, and earthy tones. With an excellent terroir of gravelly soil and old vines, Gruaud Larose produces wines that are built for aging, often requiring a decade or more to fully develop their complexity and showcase why they are considered a “super-second” growth, offering exceptional quality for their price point.
