Our Provenance Guarantee
Purchase with confidence. All of our wines are selectively sourced and thoroughly inspected for authenticity and signs of poor storage. Accepted bottles are preserved in our climate-controlled cellar until they reach your doorstep. We have no storefront and no walk-in traffic, so nothing is moved or handled between inspection and shipping.
The bottle you see photographed is the bottle you receive (or fundamentally identical when multiple bottles are listed), and our commitment to you is that it arrives as represented. If it doesn’t, we want to hear from you.
Ratings & Tasting Notes:
98 points — Jeb Dunnuck
The most intense and complex wine in the Clos Saint-Jean lineup, though never the biggest or richest. Kirsch liqueur, blackberries, herbes de Provence, scorched earth and a hint of oak. “A singular expression of old vine Grenache,” to drink after 2024 and over the following two decades.
97 points — Wine Spectator
Silky, refined and densely packed, with perfumed raspberry, cherry and plum purée, sandalwood, incense and rooibos tea, and fruit that lingers over a sweet wood-spice finish. Approachable now, built to age through 2040.
96 points — Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
Full-bodied, lush and velvety, with cedar and menthol accenting black cherry, blackberry and raspberry, and a long finish. “The fruit is kaleidoscopic, the wood luscious.”
Cult Wines International Notes:
Clos Saint-Jean was founded in 1900 and is run today by brothers Vincent and Pascal Maurel. Working with the celebrated consultant Philippe Cambie from the early 2000s, they transformed it into one of Châteauneuf-du-Pape’s most acclaimed estates, known for rich, expressive wines built on very old Grenache grown on the famous La Crau plateau.
Sanctus Sanctorum is the estate’s rarest cuvée: pure Grenache from a single parcel of very old vines in La Crau, raised in demi-muids and made in tiny quantities. The 2020 shows kirsch, blackberry, raspberry, sandalwood, herbes de Provence and scorched earth with silky, velvety density and a long, spicy finish. This listing is a magnum in its original wooden box.
