Ratings & Tasting Notes:

94 points — Burghound (Allen Meadows)
A much spicier and moderately more elegant nose reflects notes of various dark berries, poached plum and a top note of violet. The medium-bodied flavours possess a bit more volume and richness, with markedly more minerality adding lift to a solidly powerful, complex and lingering finish that is impeccably well balanced. Meadows calls it excellent and packed with development potential.

93 points — Wine Advocate
Aromas of wild blueberries, raspberry preserve, rose petals and spices introduce a medium to full-bodied, fleshy and perfumed wine with an enveloping core of fruit, sweet tannins and a long, rose-inflected finish. A separate note from the publication records dark berries, orange zest, spices and vine smoke over a medium-bodied, ample and giving palate that is soft and supple.

92 points — Vinous (Neal Martin)
An expressive bouquet with brambly red fruit, briar and light orange pith scents coalescing nicely with aeration, the oak neatly integrated. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins.

Cult Wines International Notes:

Domaine Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier has occupied the Château de Chambolle-Musigny since 1863, when the family bought the property and its four hectares of vineyard at auction. Frédéric Mugnier, the fifth generation, abandoned an engineering career to take over in 1985, and the domaine more than tripled in size in 2004 when the Clos de la Maréchale lease to Faiveley expired and that vineyard returned to the family. Mugnier’s approach runs deliberately against the robust style fashionable in the 1990s: complete destemming, native yeasts, a maximum of around 25% new oak, and bottling unfined and unfiltered. The results are among the most admired expressions of Chambolle in existence, prized for perfume and transparency rather than weight.

Les Fuées is a 71-are parcel forming the southern border of Bonnes-Mares on the upper slope at the northern edge of the village, planted in 1960 and yielding small, thick-skinned, well-spaced berries. Its proximity to the grand cru shows: this is the firmer and more structured of Mugnier’s two Chambolle premier crus, with darker fruit and more grip than the ethereal Amoureuses, though the structure arrives wrapped in perfume. 2023 was a generous year in Burgundy where balancing yield against ripeness decided quality, and Mugnier found a cool, light-footed register that recalls Burgundy before the warm decades. The wine shows wild blueberry, raspberry preserve, dark berries, poached plum and bramble over rose petal, violet, orange zest, spice and vine smoke, medium-bodied and fleshy, with sweet supple tannins, marked minerality and a long, rose-inflected finish.
