Deep garnet with a touch of brick, bursting boldly from the glass with Black Forest cake, dried mulberries, kirsch and blackcurrant pastilles, plus wafts of iodine, incense, potpourri and cinnamon stick with a hint of cigar box. Medium to full-bodied, the palate packs in muscular fruit framed by firm, ripe, grainy tannins and seamless freshness, finishing with phenomenal length. The reviewer calls it incredibly complex and multifaceted and drinking deliciously, while sensing it is still holding something back — another layer of opulence and seduction yet to emerge from its tight-knit fruit and solid structure.

Noting the distinctive antique bottle and gold-etched label, the reviewer remarks that it is fortunate the wine can support the presentation. The fruit is so ripe it almost tastes of raisins, that sweetness finely balanced by dry tannins and a concentrated texture. Exotic spices close the long aftertaste.

A little more open than the other four First Growths in the vintage, with undergrowth, baked earth and gentle spice alongside truffle, smoked caramel and bilberry fruit. Plenty of the trademark Mouton generosity and ripe tannic structure, lusciously textured. Anson records 80% of the crop going into the grand vin and 100% new oak, and notes that production for the first wine was only reduced after Philippe Dhalluin’s arrival some years later. She expects it to show the same stubborn unwillingness to fade that the First Growths all share.

Bright deep ruby with the barest hint of garnet and still very youthful. An enticing, complex nose of cassis, smoky cedar, violet, underbrush and kirsch — very Pauillac, if in a ripe style. Dense, rich and suave in the mouth, with lively acidity framing blackcurrant, blackberry jam, milk chocolate, grilled bread and spicy underbrush, finishing with noble tannins and outstanding chocolatey persistence.

Château Mouton-Rothschild sits at the northern end of Pauillac and has been in Rothschild hands since Baron Nathaniel bought it in 1853. Classified a Second Growth in 1855, it spent more than a century campaigning for reclassification under Baron Philippe de Rothschild, and in 1973 became the only château ever elevated to First Growth status. Baron Philippe also began the tradition, in 1945, of commissioning a different artist each year for the label — Picasso, Warhol, Bacon and Freud among them — which has made Mouton as collectable as an object as it is as a wine. The house style is the most flamboyant of the First Growths: rich, exotic, generous, built on Cabernet Sauvignon and 100% new oak.

2000 was the millennium vintage and Mouton marked it with the most celebrated packaging in Bordeaux — a gold-engraved bottle bearing the estate’s ram, in place of a paper label. The year itself was hot and humid, with a rainy first half and a very dry, warm second half, and the blend is 86% Cabernet Sauvignon and 14% Merlot, with 80% of the crop going into the grand vin and 100% new oak. The wine is deep garnet edging to brick, offering cassis, kirsch, dried mulberry, blackcurrant pastilles and bilberry over cedar, violet, truffle, iodine, incense, cinnamon, milk chocolate, smoked caramel and cigar box. Medium to full-bodied and lusciously textured, with muscular fruit, firm ripe grainy tannins and a chocolatey persistence of phenomenal length. Drinking beautifully now, with critics still sensing reserves held back.
