Kelley calls the 2020 brilliant, uniting the breadth and plenitude this vineyard is capable of with the quiet work the domaine has been doing to bring greater precision and integration to its white wines. Extravagant aromas of honeyed orchard fruit, confit peach and green mango meet nutmeg, freshly baked bread and buttery pastry. Full-bodied, satiny and broad-shouldered, it stays vibrant and dynamic despite its heft, revealing a chassis of chalky structuring extract as it opens in the glass, and closes long and resonant.

Mid lemon-yellow, and to Morris a completely different animal from the domaine’s Corton-Charlemagne. He describes a spectacular bouquet remarkable as much for what it withholds as for what it shows, relaying Bertrand de Villaine’s line that the wine is showing chapter titles but no text yet. The palate carries all the intensity one would hope for while still leaving space, and gains a middle dimension on retasting. Morris calls it an absolute baby destined to become a classic domaine Montrachet, and suggests drinking from 2030 to 2050.

Meadows notes the wine comes from three parcels on the Chassagne side totalling 0.68 hectares. Oak is subtly applied but perceptible, leaving room for markedly spicy and prominent petrol scents. The flavours are exceptionally rich, concentrated and impressively constituted — broad-shouldered yet refined — with outstanding power and drive across a focused, firm and hugely long finish. He reads it as an opulent Montrachet clearly built to repay extended keeping, one of the great wines of the vintage, and expects it to improve over the next thirty to forty years.

Curtis records that the Montrachet was picked on 5 September, with the domaine the last grower to harvest in the vineyard and working it alone. He notes co-director Perrine Fenal’s observation that ripe Chardonnay was very much Aubert de Villaine’s signature. Despite the wine’s rich, lush character he finds no trace of heaviness — dense, with buttery, spicy tropical fruit — and calls the vintage a dizzying success that should last fifty years. 3,539 bottles produced.

Domaine de la Romanée-Conti is the most closely watched address in Burgundy, farming its Vosne-Romanée monopoles and a short list of grand crus under long-established organic and biodynamic practice. Its presence in Montrachet is a relatively modern chapter: three parcels on the Chassagne side of the hill, totalling 0.68 hectares, assembled in separate purchases in 1963, 1965 and 1980. Production is correspondingly tiny — 3,539 bottles in 2020. Montrachet was for most of the domaine’s history its only commercially released white, joined more recently by Corton-Charlemagne, and it remains among the most fiercely contested dry white wines in the world.

2020 was a hot, dry and precocious growing season across the Côte d’Or, giving small yields of ripe, concentrated fruit and an early harvest. The domaine picked its Montrachet on 5 September, alone in the vineyard by then. The wine is opulent without heaviness: honeyed orchard fruit, confit peach and green mango over nutmeg, fresh bread and buttery pastry, full-bodied and satiny, kept vibrant by a chalky structuring extract that emerges as it opens. Critical response was close to unanimous, with a maximum score from the Wine Advocate and near-perfect marks elsewhere, and several reviewers framed it as one of the great white wines of the vintage — one built to reward thirty to forty years in the cellar.
