Cantina Rizzi is a family-owned estate in Treiso, the highest commune in the Barbaresco DOCG, whose vineyards were planted as early as the 1960s on the white marl, calcareous soils typical of this elevated, south-facing part of the Langhe. The winery draws its name and its flagship bottling from the Rizzi cru — a 10-hectare site straddling the communes of Treiso and San Rocco Seno d’Elvio, sitting between 220 and 310 meters elevation. The estate has long been managed by the Dellapiana family, with son Enrico overseeing both winemaking and viticulture, and is celebrated for producing wines of classical Barbaresco elegance, combining freshness of fruit with the intensity and longevity that the best Treiso sites can achieve.

The 2000 growing season in Piedmont was a warm, ripe vintage that generated considerable early excitement. Low yields for Nebbiolo produced concentrated, high-sugar fruit with good color and extract, resulting in wines notable for their soft, approachable character and almost sweet-fruited richness — stylistically closer to the plush 1997 and 1999 vintages than to the more structured 1996 or 2001. Bruna Giacosa, in a direct comparison of vintages, likened the 2000 to the much-admired 2020 for its combination of richness, elegance, and structure. Now at over two decades of age, a well-stored bottle should be showing significant tertiary development — dried cherry, leather, tobacco, and the earthy, mineral complexity that mature Nebbiolo from Treiso is prized for.
