Ratings & Tasting Notes:

95 points Wine Spectator — Top 100 Wine of 1994 (#9)

This review describes a “real mouthful of Cabernet,” bold, ripe, and rich, with complex layers of currant, black cherry, and plum accented by cedary oak, calling it terrific with a strong track record for aging.

91 points Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate

This review describes a dark purple color with a sweet, jammy blackcurrant-scented nose, noting a lush, succulent texture “crammed with glycerin and extract,” calling it surprisingly soft — a hallmark of the vintage — with 10-12+ years of aging potential.

Cult Wines International Notes:

Caymus Vineyards traces its roots to the Wagner family, who arrived in Rutherford, Napa Valley after the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and began farming grapes for other producers for decades before founding their own commercial winery in 1972. Led today by Chuck Wagner, who was born and raised on the estate, Caymus has grown into one of Napa Valley’s most respected Cabernet houses, anchored by over 60 acres of estate Cabernet Sauvignon in the Rutherford District. The winery’s flagship Special Selection bottling has twice been named Wine Spectator’s Wine of the Year, a rare distinction in American winemaking.

1994 is widely regarded as a landmark vintage for Napa Valley, marking what many consider the start of the region’s modern golden era following years of recovery from the AxR rootstock crisis and phylloxera. Growing conditions were close to ideal: low winter rainfall gave way to a dry, cool spring and a long, moderate summer with only a handful of days approaching 100°F, allowing for slow, even ripening and outstanding phenolic development. The result was a vintage of real depth and structure across Napa Cabernet, and this bottling stands as one of its most celebrated examples — rich, opulent, and built with real aging potential.
