Ratings & Tasting Notes:
98 points Antonio Galloni (Vinous)
The 2017 Le Pergole Torte is a wine of pure and total sensuality. I imagine the 2017 is one of those wines that will always offer tremendous pleasure. Pliant and inviting, with soft, voluptuous curves, the 2017 is off the charts gorgeous. Layers of deep Sangiovese fruit gradually reveal themselves with air. “I can’t imagine anyone who loves Le Pergole Torte not wanting a good supply of the 2017 in the cellar.” Antonio Galloni, September 2020
96 points Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
A dark and sensuous expression with a well-matched “portrait of a lady” by artist Alberto Manfredi depicted on the iconic label of this vintage. Her full, ruby-colored lips speak of the generous and abundant fruit displayed here, and her slanted mascara-lined eyes underline the heat and power of the vintage. “This edition reflects the heat and the dry growing conditions of the vintage, however there is more sweetness and opulent fruit here… It finishes with elegant tannins and a long, polished mouthfeel.” Monica Larner, September 2020
95 points Decanter
Black tea, allspice and woodland berries lead on the nose, while the palate is dominated by a minerally, stony grip. “Tangy acidity, powdery tannins and subtle, harmonised wood are precisely balanced in this sophisticated wine which allies elegance with power.” Decanter, June 2020
Cult Wines International Notes:
A profound icon of Italian viticulture, Montevertine stands as one of the most revered domains in Tuscany, situated in the high-altitude hills of Radda in Chianti. Founded in 1967 by the late Sergio Manetti and carried forward today by his son Martino alongside legendary oenologist Giulio Gambelli’s historic influence, the estate gained legendary status by rebelling against traditional Chianti Classico laws that required white grapes in red blends. First produced in 1977, Le Pergole Torte was the very first 100% single-varietal Sangiovese crafted in the Radda subzone. Sourced exclusively from the estate’s oldest vines planted between 1968 and 1999 on high-elevation albarese and galestro limestone soils, the wine is celebrated worldwide for its aristocratic longevity, ethereal purity, and its iconic, collectible label artwork painted by artist Alberto Manfredi.
The 2017 growing season across Tuscany was characterized by intense summer heat and prolonged drought conditions, presenting a formidable test for growers throughout the region. However, Montevertine’s unique microclimate—perched nearly 500 meters above sea level in the cool, forest-surrounded amphitheater of Radda—proved to be a crucial savior. The dramatic day-to-night temperature drops preserved essential natural acidity and prevented heat stress, allowing the old-vine Sangiovese to achieve complete phenolic maturity with exceptional concentration. Fermented in traditional neutral concrete vats for nearly a month, the wine matured gracefully for 12 months in French oak barriques followed by an additional 12 months in large Slavonian oak casks before bottling.
At nearly a decade of bottle age, the 2017 Montevertine Le Pergole Torte exhibits a captivating synthesis of hot-vintage opulence and signature high-altitude Radda elegance. The glass opens with a dark, voluptuous bouquet of black cherry confit, crushed red plums, pipe tobacco, dried violets, and sweet Tuscan maquis herbs. On the palate, the wine reveals impressive structural density and a silky, pliant mouthfeel, beautifully counterbalanced by a vibrant thread of mineral acidity and fine-grained, chalky tannins that frame a long, polished finish. This lavish, top-scoring vintage represents a magnificent acquisition for serious cellars and lovers of pure Sangiovese royalty.
