Cult Wines International Notes:
Maison Louis Jadot was founded in 1859 by Louis Henry Denis Jadot and has since become one of the most respected names in Burgundy. Over nearly two centuries, the house has expanded its reach throughout the region while maintaining a focus on terroir-driven winemaking. The Chapelle aux Loups vineyards are situated in the Saint-Veran appellation of the Maconnais, surrounding a 12th-century Romanesque church. These south-western plots are characterized by limestone-rich soils that provide an ideal foundation for high-quality Chardonnay, resulting in wines noted for their floral aromas and distinct minerality.
The 1988 growing season in Burgundy was marked by a mild but wet spring that led to an adequate flowering. While the early summer months saw mixed conditions, the weather shifted significantly in mid-August. Three months of ideal sunshine and dry conditions followed, providing just enough rain to prevent the vines from drying out. This warm spell persisted through a successful October harvest. The resulting wines from this vintage are recognized for their excellent health and firm structure. For white Burgundies like the Saint-Veran, the year produced Chardonnays with high acidity and remarkable freshness, evolving over time to show complex smoky and nutty notes. The 1988 Louis Jadot Chapelle aux Loups Saint-Veran exemplifies this balance of vibrant fruit and refined structure typical of a classic Burgundian vintage.
