Cult Wines International Notes:

The 1978 E. Pira & Figli Barolo Riserva represents a pivotal moment in the history of one of Barolo’s most storied estates. At the time of this vintage, the winery was still under the traditional stewardship of Luigi Pira, one of the last great patriarchs of the old school of winemaking. Located in the prestigious Cannubi hills, the estate was renowned for its commitment to long macerations and aging in large neutral oak casks. This specific bottling precedes the transition to Chiara Boschis, who took over in 1990 and became a leader among the Barolo Boys, modernizing the estate while maintaining its soul. The 1978 vintage itself is widely considered a benchmark year for the Piedmont region, characterized by a long, cool growing season that allowed for exceptional structural development and aromatic complexity.

The season began with a cold, wet spring that delayed budbreak, followed by a temperate summer without the extreme heat spikes common in modern viticulture. September and October provided the classic diurnal temperature shifts necessary for the Nebbiolo grape to reach peak phenolic ripeness while retaining high natural acidity. This resulted in wines of immense longevity and power, often requiring decades to soften. The 1978 Riserva remains a testament to the Pira family’s traditional methods, offering a profile of dried rose petals, tar, and savory earth underpinned by the formidable tannins and acid backbone that define this legendary vintage in the heart of Barolo.
