Cult Wines International Notes:
Chateau Lafite Rothschild holds a singular place in viticultural history, with its winemaking roots in the Pauillac region dating back to the 13th century. By the 18th century, under the stewardship of the Segur family, it became known as the King’s Wine, and it was eventually classified as a First Growth in 1855. Baron James de Rothschild acquired the estate in 1868, initiating a period of modern prestige that has spanned over 150 years of family ownership.
The 1967 growing season in Bordeaux was characterized by a cold and damp spring, followed by a remarkably hot and dry July and August that accelerated ripening. However, the vintage was ultimately defined by heavy, persistent rains that began in early September and continued through the harvest. These conditions presented significant challenges, resulting in a large crop that required meticulous selection. While the 1960s were a period of transition for the estate, the 1967 Lafite Rothschild remains a historical curiosity, typically reflecting a lighter, more elegant profile with the classic cedar and graphite nuances of its gravel-rich terroir. Because this vintage was produced before the introduction of large blending vats in 1970, individual bottles offer a unique, unblended glimpse into the specific parcels of the vineyard as they existed over half a century ago. It stands as a testament to the resilience of the estate during a difficult climatic era for the Medoc.
