Tasting Notes:
97 points James Suckling
This is a DP that shows the ripeness of the 2009 vintage yet remains full of energy. Gorgeous aromas of cream, apple, mango, honeysuckle, and chalk follow through to a full body and super fine, tight texture. Dense and agile. Vinous. It’s like a top grand cru white Burgundy. Think Bâtard-Montrachet. More depth than the 2006.
96 points Decanter
Generous, elegant and full of pleasure, there’s lots of complexity in this curvy wine. It has a rich creaminess with minerals, chalky depth and a round mouthfeel. Flavours of cox’s apple, soy, gentle ginger spice, sweet patisserie and cappuccino are joined by a fine and persistent acidity. Profound length. (JS)
96 points Wine Spectator
There’s a subtle power to this graceful Champagne, which boasts a firm, crystalline frame of acidity married to the fine, satinlike mousse and notes of white raspberry, brioche and Earl Grey tea. Seamless through to the long finish of smoke and spice accents, this opens beautifully in the glass. *Collectible* (AN)
Cult Wines International Notes:
The 2009 Dom Pérignon Vintage represents a triumph of winemaking intuition over a complex growing season. The history of the Maison is rooted in the 17th-century Benedictine Abbey of Hautvillers, where the monk Dom Pierre Pérignon pioneered essential viticultural techniques—such as blending different crus and the use of corks—to create “the best wine in the world.” Today, the brand remains committed to its “vintage-only” manifesto, producing a cuvée only when the year’s harvest meets its exacting standards for harmony and aging potential.
The 2009 growing season began with a rigorous, snowy winter followed by a mild but rainy spring that complicated flowering and raised the threat of mildew. While July storms caused concern, August proved to be the turning point, delivering five weeks of uninterrupted sunshine, heat, and dry weather. This summery period, marred only by a localized hailstorm on September 4, pushed the fruit to superlative maturity. Under the guidance of then-Chef de Cave Richard Geoffroy, the house made the daring decision to delay the harvest until September 12 to capture the full ripeness of the grapes. The resulting wine is celebrated for its majestic, fleshy fruit and unusual accessibility, marking 2009 as a vintage of “superlative maturity” that beautifully balances solar richness with the house’s signature precision and saline minerality.
