Ratings & Tasting Notes:

98-100 points Vinous

“Tasted just before bottling, the 2023 Syrah Distenta V has all the makings of a masterpiece. Beguiling aromatics of exotic spice, violets, blueberries and crushed rocks soar from the glass, leading into a wine of staggering elegance and expressiveness. Juicy yet refined, it already shows remarkable completeness, with a suave balance that promises even greater things in bottle. The blend is 85.8% Syrah, 5.5% Grenache, 3.7% Petite Sirah, 3.3% Mourvèdre, 1.3% Petit Manseng and 0.4% Muscat, vinified with 11% whole clusters. Nearly half of the fruit comes from the Third Twin Vineyard in 2023, which imbues the Distenta V with brightness and verve.”

96-98 points Jeb Dunnuck

“The 2023 Syrah Distenta V comes from the estate’s The Third Twin, Cumulus, and Eleven Confessions vineyards and is a blend of 85.8% Syrah, 5.5% Grenache, 3.7% Petite Sirah, 3.3% Mourvèdre, and the rest white varieties. Fermented with 11% whole clusters and aged 23 months in 63% new French oak, it displays a deep purple hue and offers dark blackberries, cracked pepper, violets, flowers, and leather. This is a darker, focused, peppery, full-bodied style that’s beautifully balanced with the fresher, focused character of the vintage.”

Cult Wines International Notes:

Sine Qua Non is the visionary creation of Manfred and Elaine Krankl, who founded the winery in 1994 with a commitment to producing ultra-limited, Rhone-style blends that challenge traditional viticultural norms. Based in Ventura, California, the estate is famous for its “one-and-done” philosophy, where every vintage receives a unique name, label artwork, and often a slightly different varietal composition, making each release a singular collectible. The “Distenta” series, which debuted in 2019, represents a shift toward utilizing predominantly estate-grown fruit from their four meticulously farmed vineyards: Eleven Confessions, Cumulus, The Third Twin, and Molly Aïda. Known for labor-intensive farming and a obsessive attention to detail in the cellar, Sine Qua Non has earned a reputation for producing wines of massive concentration, opulent textures, and remarkable complexity that consistently rank among the most sought-after in the world.

The 2023 growing season in California’s Central Coast was a dramatic departure from the previous decade of drought, characterized by a cool, “marathon” cycle that allowed for incredible flavor development. A cold, wet winter replenished the soil’s deep water reserves, followed by a cool spring that significantly delayed bud break and flowering. The summer remained mild without any major heatwaves, providing the Syrah with an exceptionally long “hang time” to develop deep phenolic maturity and aromatic complexity while retaining vibrant natural acidity. Harvesting occurred much later than usual, often stretching into late October and November. This extended season resulted in a 2023 Distenta Syrah that marries the estate’s signature power and richness with a refined structural elegance and freshness, reflecting one of the most balanced and classic growing years in recent memory.
