Cult Wines International Notes:
The 2020 Jean-Claude Boisset Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru is a profound expression of one of Gevrey-Chambertin’s most seductive vineyards, crafted under a philosophy of “viniculture” that bridges the gap between vine and cellar. While the Boisset family has been a major force in Burgundy since 1961, the modern prestige of this label was redefined in 2002 with the arrival of winemaker Grégory Patriat. Patriat transformed the house style into a boutique, terroir-focused operation, working with 45-year-old vines in the “Charmes” climat. Located on the upper slopes just below Chambertin, this site features thin, stony soils over hard Premeaux limestone, which naturally limits yields. The resulting wine is fermented with 100% whole clusters and aged in French oak for 18 months without racking or filtration, a process designed to preserve the crystalline purity and structural integrity of the Grand Cru fruit.
The 2020 growing season was an outlier in Burgundy’s history, defined by its incredible speed and solar intensity. A very mild winter led to an early bud break, and a warm, dry spring ensured a rapid, healthy flowering. The summer months were characterized by significant drought and persistent heat, which produced small, thick-skinned berries with an extraordinary concentration of phenolics and sugars. To maintain the “freshness” and tension that define the Boisset style, harvesting began at the end of August—the earliest start in the estate’s history. Despite the heat, the 2020 Charmes-Chambertin avoided any “baked” character, instead showing a vibrant, high-toned acidity and deep, savory complexity. It is a vintage that marries the historic power of Gevrey-Chambertin with a modern precision, resulting in a wine of immense energy and legendary aging potential.
