The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Mason’s Cabernet is a smoking value offering a big, rich, mouthful of ripe black fruit as well as full-bodied richness, ripe, velvety tannins, no hard edges, and classic Cabernet tobacco, spice, and chocolate nuances.
Cult Wines International Notes:
Lewis Cellars was founded in 1992 by former IndyCar driver Randy Lewis and his wife Debbie, bringing the same high-octane focus required on the racetrack to the world of Napa Valley winemaking. The winery quickly gained a reputation for creating “bold, plush, and polished” wines that prioritize ripe fruit and immediate accessibility. The Mason’s label, named after Randy and Debbie’s grandson, was introduced as a way to showcase a more youthful and “playful” side of the Lewis style. While it is sourced from several of the same premium vineyard sites as their flagship Napa Valley Cabernet, the Mason’s bottling is intentionally crafted to be “front-loaded” with fruit, offering a rich and hedonistic experience that captures the exuberant spirit of the next generation of the Lewis family.
The 2021 vintage is widely regarded as a “dream year” for Napa Valley Cabernet, marked by a return to exceptional quality following the challenges of the previous year. The season was defined by a significant drought—the second consecutive dry year—which naturally limited yields and produced small, intensely concentrated berries with a high skin-to-juice ratio. This concentration provided the 2021 Mason’s with its signature deep, “saturated” profile. Unlike the heat spikes of 2022, the 2021 growing season remained relatively temperate, allowing for long, slow ripening and the development of refined, velvety tannins. The resulting wine is a “smoking value” that balances classic Lewis power—dense black cherry and café mocha—with the vibrant acidity and structural precision that have made the 2021 vintage a modern benchmark for the region.
