The 2022 White Wine Distenta IV is a blend of 32% Roussanne, 30% Gelber Muskateller, 15% Chardonnay, 13% Petit Manseng, and the rest Viognier, aged 22.5 months in 75% new French oak. Medium gold in color, it offers blockbuster aromas of honeyed pineapple, orange marmalade, flower oil, and blanched almond. Full-bodied, deep, and opulent on the palate, it has a layered, powerful mouthfeel, integrated acidity, and a great finish. It comes closest in style to a great Hermitage from Le Méal yet carries an exotic quality that makes it truly singular. Drink 2025-2035.
Cult Wines International Notes:
Sine Qua Non was founded in 1994 by Manfred and Elaine Krankl, born from a desire to create artisanal, world-class wines that defy traditional Californian conventions. Based in Ventura, the winery has earned a cult following for its unconventional approach, characterized by unique names and labels for every vintage and a focus on Rhone varietals. What began as a project sourcing fruit from top-tier vineyards has evolved into an estate-driven powerhouse, primarily utilizing their own meticulously farmed sites like Eleven Confessions, Cumulus, and Third Twin. The winery is celebrated for its commitment to extremely low yields and a labor-intensive winemaking process that prioritizes texture and complexity over volume.
The 2023 growing season in the Central Coast was defined by a remarkably cool and long cycle, providing an ideal environment for the white Rhone varieties that comprise Distenta V. A wet winter replenished soil moisture, followed by a mild spring and summer that allowed for slow, steady ripening. This extended hang time resulted in fruit with exceptional aromatic depth and vibrant acidity, avoiding the heat spikes that can sometimes lead to overly heavy profiles. The Distenta series, which focuses on the core estate fruit, showcases the elegance of this specific year. In the glass, this white blend offers a concentrated yet fresh profile, balancing rich stone fruit and floral notes with a refined mineral backbone, serving as a testament to the Krankls’ mastery of site and season.
