I want to be upfront: I could only verify one major independent critic score for this specific bottling. Kistler makes a similarly named but distinct single-vineyard “Kistler Vineyard” Pinot Noir (also labeled Sonoma Coast) that has more extensive critic coverage, and Steve Kistler separately founded another winery, Occidental, that also produces Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir — I made sure not to pull reviews from either of those in error, since they’re different wines entirely despite similar names.

Kistler Vineyards has stood among California’s most revered Chardonnay and Pinot Noir producers since its founding in 1978, built on a Burgundian philosophy of native-yeast fermentation, French oak, and minimal intervention. While the winery’s Chardonnays tend to draw the most acclaim, longtime winemaker and president Jason Kesner has spent recent vintages elevating the Pinot Noir program’s profile. The Sonoma Coast bottling draws from a rotating selection of Kistler’s estate and partner vineyards along the fog-cooled Sonoma County coastline — sites the winery describes as a proving ground for future single-vineyard bottlings, offering an early look at up-and-coming plantings not yet mature enough to stand alone.
The 2023 growing season across coastal Sonoma is widely regarded as an exceptional one for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay alike. A wet winter delayed budbreak by roughly a month, and the season that followed stayed cool and moderate throughout — conditions Kesner has called some of the best he’s seen for expressing site character. A warm stretch in October allowed the fruit to fully ripen without the heat spikes that can flatten a vintage’s nuance. The result is a Pinot Noir built on freshness and precision: bright red fruit, floral lift, and fine-grained structure, characteristic of the vintage’s widely-praised cool-climate balance.
