A masterpiece of deep character and precision, this full-bodied Cabernet displays an incredibly expressive transparency. The bouquet is layered with dark berry fruit, wild sagebrush, and clean pine needles. The palate is brilliantly full-bodied, structured with an exceptionally fine velvet mouthfeel that leads into an ultra-intense, remarkably persistent finish. The winemaking pedigree shines through, showcasing extreme length and a masterful focus that makes it “extremely long and delicious.” James Suckling, September 2025
98 points Decanter
A deep, dense, and penetrating wine of remarkable clarity, this expression delivers mineral freshness combined with pure, ripe currant fruit. The palate swells with complex layers of scorched earth and wet redwood, underpinned by incredibly fragrant, mineral-laced tannins. Salty crushed stone and cast iron notes meet a creamy, rich blackberry texture, accented by hints of cigar box and cedar spice. It stands out as an incredibly profound and explosive effort that balances California forest aromatics with an “explosive elegance, and a brightness of fruit.” Jonathan Cristaldi, February 2025
95 points Jeb Dunnuck
Fermented in small puncheons and aged for nearly three years in custom new French oak, this single-vineyard expression bursts from the glass with sweet cassis, dark raspberries, savory flowers, incense, and comforting baking spice notes. Already exceedingly expressive and hard to resist, it maintains an open, lavish, and approachable posture defined by highly polished, sweet tannins and seamless structural balance. It is a stunning, beautifully pure effort that “is going to evolve gracefully on its overall balance and purity.” Jeb Dunnuck, December 2025
Cult Wines International Notes:
Fortunate Son represents a phenomenal, boundary-pushing endeavor by Jayson Woodbridge, the legendary and uncompromising visionary behind the iconic cult estate Hundred Acre. Conceived to honor the deeply rooted heritage of Napa Valley’s historic family-farmed plots, the boutique winery combines Woodbridge’s perfectionist viticultural ethos with traditional, microscopic-scale production. While the primary Hundred Acre labels focus heavily on the steep volcanic terroirs of St. Helena and Calistoga, “The Warrior” marks an elite milestone for the winemaker as his first dedicated Cabernet Sauvignon sourced from the western benchlands of Oakville. Grown on a small heritage vineyard nestled at the foot of the Mayacamas Mountains, these vines are meticulously farmed under the supervision of acclaimed viticulturist Jim Barbour, yielding an impossibly concentrated, low-yield single-vineyard gem that underwent a lavish 32-month maturation in hand-selected, ultra-tight-grain new French oak barrels.
The 2022 growing season in Oakville was a thrilling narrative of climatic intensity, producing a vintage of arresting power and unexpected grace. A mild, steady spring and a temperate early summer allowed the fruit to mature with impeccable acidity and exceptional skin phenolic development. The vintage was ultimately defined by a historic, blistering heat wave in early September, a trial by fire that forced the old, deeply rooted vines to naturally concentrate their sugars and crop loads to absolute peak intensity. Thanks to the meticulous canopy management applied by the vineyard team, the fruit was protected from sunburn, preserving a brilliant structural freshness despite the record-breaking heat. The 2022 “The Warrior” emerged from this dramatic season as a monumental, full-throttle powerhouse, seamlessly packing an inky, pitch-black core of crème de cassis and liquid minerals with silky, fine-grained tannins that will ensure a legendary evolution in the cellar.
