The 2021 Silver Oak Cabernet Sauvignon from Alexander Valley was harvested between 4 September and 8 October. The blend comprises 96% Cabernet Sauvignon, 2% Merlot and 1% each of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. After blending, it was barrel-aged for 24 months in American oak, 50% of which was new, followed by 14 months of bottle ageing prior to release. The wine is beautifully layered and highly fragrant, with remarkable precision and focus in this vintage. Medium- to full-bodied, it integrates the hallmark Silver Oak American spice character through cedarwood aromatics, elegant whispers of vanilla bean, and nuances of fresh fennel (from more refined American oak barrels crafted after precision trials of both seasoning and toasting from the American oak cooperage they own in Higbee, Missouri). Supple dark-cherry and blackberry fruit are framed by graphite minerality, violets and clove, building in richness and complexity across the palate. Suave and silken, the dark-berry fruit is wrapped in a tapestry of velvety tannins, gliding to a focused finish of brown baking spices and crisp, clean acidity. (JC)

Cult Wines International Notes:

Silver Oak Cellars was established in 1972 by Ray Duncan and winemaker Justin Meyer, rooted in a bold, singular vision: to produce only world-class Cabernet Sauvignon, aged exclusively in American oak, and crafted for decades of cellar potential. Beginning in a repurposed Napa Valley dairy barn, the winery became a cornerstone of California viticulture by identifying the unique potential of the Alexander Valley—a region Silver Oak helped put on the map long before its official AVA designation. Today, operated by the second generation of the Duncan family, the estate remains defined by a commitment to precision viticulture and sustainable, state-of-the-art winemaking, with their Alexander Valley facility serving as a benchmark for environmental stewardship, achieving both LEED Platinum and Living Building Challenge certifications.

The 2021 growing season in the Alexander Valley was defined by balance and remarkable clarity. A dry winter, a cool spring, and a gentle, temperate summer allowed the vines to thrive at a natural, measured pace, producing fruit characterized by exceptional depth and vibrancy. This temperate cycle allowed the Cabernet Sauvignon to achieve ideal phenolic maturity while retaining the bright, signature acidity and structural elegance that define the Silver Oak style. The 2021 vintage underwent 24 months of aging in American oak barrels from the estate’s own cooperage, “The Oak,” followed by an extended period of bottle aging before release. The resulting wine is beautifully layered and highly fragrant, offering the classic profile of blackberry, black cherry, and raspberry, seamlessly integrated with hints of cedar, vanilla, and clove—a precise and polished expression of a truly harmonious year.
