Our Provenance Guarantee
Purchase with confidence. All of our wines are selectively sourced and thoroughly inspected for authenticity and signs of poor storage. Accepted bottles are preserved in our climate-controlled cellar until they reach your doorstep. We have no storefront and no walk-in traffic, so nothing is moved or handled between inspection and shipping.
The bottle you see photographed is the bottle you receive (or fundamentally identical when multiple bottles are listed), and our commitment to you is that it arrives as represented. If it doesn’t, we want to hear from you.
Ratings & Tasting Notes:
98 points — Jeb Dunnuck
Dunnuck calls it the finest vintage of this cuvée he has tasted and a future “Legendary Mayacamas.” Cassis, ripe cherry, graphite, crayon and cedar pencil lead to a medium to full-bodied palate with fine, ripe tannins and a long finish. He expects it to need about a decade and to live 50 to 60 years. Drink 2030–2080.
98 points — Decanter
A stunning Cabernet drawn from several mountain blocks, chiefly Sunset and Top, and aged three years in a mix of large casks and foudres. Red fruit, savoury flourishes, bay leaf, mint and a sea-salt edge, from a drought vintage with very small yields.
97 points — Vinous
Vivid and classic, with dark fruit, espresso, dried herbs, iron, forest floor and incense. A quintessential Mount Veeder mountain wine with enough polish to avoid any rusticity.
97 points — Wine Spectator
Sweet bay and chaparral lead into red and black currant and cherry compote, with tobacco leaf and cast iron notes. The finish is long and driven by tannin and acidity. Rated “Collectible” and built for long aging.
Cult Wines International Notes:
Mayacamas sits high on Mount Veeder in a stone winery first built in 1889, and has been making wine there under various owners ever since. Through the Travers family’s long tenure it earned a reputation for austere, uncompromising mountain Cabernet that rewards decades in the cellar, and since 2013 the current owners have restored the vineyards while keeping the traditional style, with long aging in large, neutral oak rather than new barrels.
The 2021 comes from a drought year with tiny yields, blended from several mountain blocks led by Sunset and Top, and aged three years in large casks and foudres. Critics place it among the greatest Mayacamas releases: cassis, cherry, graphite, bay leaf, mint, espresso and iron over fine, firm tannins and bright acidity. It is a classic Mount Veeder Cabernet built for very long aging.
