Cult Wines International Notes:
The 2019 Jean-Claude Boisset Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru is a powerful expression of Burgundy’s most famous walled vineyard, crafted with a boutique approach that belies the Maison’s historical scale. Founded in 1961 in Vougeot, the winery underwent a qualitative revolution in 2002 when Jean-Charles Boisset appointed Grégory Patriat to spearhead a “viniculture” philosophy. This strategy shifted the focus toward small-lot, parcel-specific winemaking with minimal intervention, utilizing the state-of-the-art, gravity-fed Ursulines winery in Nuits-Saint-Georges. The fruit for this Grand Cru is sourced from the iconic Clos de Vougeot, a 50-hectare site first enclosed by Cistercian monks in 1336. Boisset’s specific parcel provides the structural density and “earthy” complexity traditional to the Clos, refined by Patriat’s signature use of whole-cluster fermentation and low-impact oak aging.
The 2019 growing season is heralded as a modern classic, defined by a “solar” character that retained surprising freshness. After a mild winter and a cool spring that resulted in a lower fruit set, the summer brought intense heatwaves in June and July. These dry, sunny conditions led to small berries with thick skins and highly concentrated sugars. Unlike the more turbulent 2020 harvest, the 2019 season allowed for a steady phenolic ripening that preserved vibrant acidity. Harvesting for the Clos de Vougeot took place under clear skies, yielding a crop of exceptional health and purity. The resulting wine is celebrated for its deep concentration and silky tannins, offering a rich, multifaceted profile that balances the warmth of the vintage with the timeless, stony precision of its Grand Cru terroir.
