Tasting Notes:
100 points Jane Anson Packed full of vivid (there really doesn’t seem any other word for it) cassis and blueberry fruits, floral, textural and nuanced. Cabernet Sauvignon signature mix of crushed rocks, mint, crayon and slate, just a brilliant wine and a reflection of its exceptional site. This is elegant and precise while still delivering muscular, powerful flavours. I first tasted it at the property last November, and it’s reassuring to see it make exactly the same impression when retasted back in Bordeaux, away from the awe-inspiring landscape. Harvest September 10 through to October 23. David Cilli winemaker, director Will Harlan. (2/2023)
100 points James Suckling Violets and blueberries with cloves and pine cones, following through to a medium to full body with tight, seamless tannins, like finely cut diamonds. It’s very closed and reserved at the end. Weightless. Needs plenty of time to open. Unique wine. (4/2022)
100 points The Wine Independent Bottled in early 2021, the deep purple-black colored 2018 Promontory soars with bold black fruits—warm cassis, blackberry pie, and chocolate-covered cherries—leading to wafts of violets, tar, iron ore, and forest floor with a touch of black truffles. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is super intense, bright, and crunchy, with a rock-solid backbone of firm, finely-grained tannins and bold freshness, finishing incredibly long and mineral-laced. While it unquestionably displays its Napa Valley DNA, this is a wine of such singular expression and evocative beauty it’s sure to have you picking your jaw up off the floor. Allow it 5-6 years in the cellar to thoroughly fan its tail and then drink it over the next 30+ years. (LPB) (3/2022)
100 points Vinous The 2018 Promontory is as phenomenal as it has always been, but it, too is going through a period of reticence. This dark, brooding Cabernet is packed with character. Time in the glass brings out striking inner perfume and sweetness. There is a feeling of stark minimalism in the 2018 that I find compelling. Constantly changing in the glass, the 2018 is a magical, exquisite Cabernet Sauvignon. (AG) (10/2022)
97-100 points Wine Advocate The 2018 Promontory was tasted as a barrel sample. Deep garnet-purple in color, it slowly unfurls to reveal a vibrant black fruit core of ripe plums, boysenberries and black currants with hints of crushed rocks, bay leaves, lavender, olives and iron ore. Medium to full-bodied, the palate features firm, exquisitely fine-grained tannins and seamless freshness, beautifully framing the intense, crunchy black fruits, finishing long and minerally. (LPB) 97+ (1/2021)
98 points Jeb Dunnuck I loved the 2018 Promontory, which is more structured and powerful than the 2017, with more framing tannins as well as a gorgeous bouquet of black and blue fruits, lavender, sage, and lead pencil-like nuances. The balance here is perfect, and it’s one of those wines that’s going to evolve gracefully for 2 to 3 decades if well stored. 98+ (2/2023)
