From vines averaging 56 years, the domaine’s headline wine does not disappoint. Aromatic fireworks of ripe red and black fruit, toast, spice and a decadent perfumed note lead into a complex palate of ripe raspberry, dark cherry, spice, cream and minerals that saturates the palate. Sweet, dense filigree tannins and fine acidity carry an opulent texture and presence. Already open, expressive and accessible, but the concentration, acidity and structure will carry it for decades. Harvested 10 September at 22.65 hl/ha, bottled 22 March 2017, 403 cases produced. Drinking window 2025 to 2060.

Kelley places this among the pinnacles of a great red Burgundy vintage. The bouquet is kaleidoscopically complex — raspberry and red plum against rose petal, peony, blood orange and spice. On the palate it is silky, medium to full-bodied and stunningly complete, its supremely elegant tannins entirely cloaked in delicate red fruit. Despite the concentration and persistence, he finds the wine utterly weightless, with an effortless harmony and an unremitting finish that he says preclude any argument about its benchmark quality. Cropped at 22 hectolitres per hectare, harvested 10 September.

Meadows opens by conceding that words fail him. The nose is restrained almost to the point of muteness, but aggressive agitation draws out an exotically broad range of perfumed floral, spice, tea and incense notes. The texture is opulent, concentrated and mineral-driven, the inner-mouth perfume amplifying the aromatics into what he describes as a sensory assault, and the finish stayed with him over the following forty-eight hours. He notes a hint of warmth as the only detectable imperfection and calls the wine close to perfect.

Full dark red. Darker and more reticent on the nose than La Tâche, led early on by black raspberry, cherry, spice, crushed rock and coffee. It enters the mouth like liquid velvet, expanding into a three-dimensional texture with great depth to its soil-inflected flavours of flowers, spice, mocha, underbrush and savoury minerality. Tanzer describes a seamless, spherical, youthfully impenetrable wine that saturates the palate, notes the absence of the vegetal nuances this bottling often shows young, and expects positive evolution for three decades or more.

Domaine de la Romanée-Conti farms the most valuable vineyard land on earth from a modest cellar in Vosne-Romanée. The Romanée-Conti vineyard is a monopole of a little over 1.8 hectares, worked by monks in the Middle Ages, renamed La Romanée under the Croonembourg family, and given its present name after the Prince de Conti acquired it in 1760. The domaine took its modern shape in 1942, when Henri Leroy bought a half share alongside the de Villaine family. The vineyard’s exhausted pre-phylloxera vines were pulled up in 1945 and replanted, the first vintage from those plantings released in 1952. Farming is biodynamic and yields are among the lowest in Burgundy.

2015 was a warm, dry vintage in the Côte de Nuits, producing small berries, deep concentration and unusually ripe tannins — a year ranked almost immediately among the finest of the modern era. The domaine picked its Romanée-Conti on 10 September at 22.65 hectolitres per hectare from vines averaging 56 years of age, bottling in March 2017. Just 403 cases were made. The wine is a study in weightless intensity: raspberry, red plum and dark cherry against rose petal, peony, blood orange, spice and incense, silky and complete on the palate, its tannins so fine they vanish into the fruit. Two perfect scores and two near-perfect ones make this among the most decorated Romanée-Conti bottlings ever released.
