Our Provenance Guarantee
Purchase with confidence. All of our wines are selectively sourced and thoroughly inspected for authenticity and signs of poor storage. Accepted bottles are preserved in our climate-controlled cellar until they reach your doorstep. We have no storefront and no walk-in traffic, so nothing is moved or handled between inspection and shipping.
The bottle you see photographed is the bottle you receive (or fundamentally identical when multiple bottles are listed), and our commitment to you is that it arrives as represented. If it doesn’t, we want to hear from you.
Ratings & Tasting Notes:
98 points — James Suckling
Lilac, dark berry and sandalwood aromas lead into a full-bodied palate with fine tannins and a long, savory finish. Suckling calls it “A triumph” and expects it to keep improving for five to ten years.
97 points — Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
Delicate yet deep and beautifully balanced, with extra spice from an additional year in oak cask compared with the estate’s base Brunello. Root beer, ginger, rosemary oil, leather, tar, prune, blackberry and cassis lead to a silky finish, with steady evolution ahead.
96 points — Wine & Spirits
Juicy black cherry framed by clove, thyme and black tea, with firm tannins and a finish that lasts well over a minute. Enjoyable now, with many years in front of it.
95 points — Wine Enthusiast
Blue flower, ripe berry, pressed powder and Mediterranean herb aromas, followed by black cherry, dark cooking spice and licorice on a youthfully austere, tightly knit palate. Suggested drinking window 2020–2030.
94 points — Wine Spectator
Cherry and strawberry fruit with leather, bitter almond and tobacco. Firm and angular, finishing long with iron and tea accents. Best from 2019 through 2033.
Cult Wines International Notes:
Ciacci Piccolomini d’Aragona sits at Castelnuovo dell’Abate in the warm south-eastern corner of Montalcino, centred on a 17th-century palazzo that was once the bishop’s residence. When the last Countess of the Ciacci Piccolomini line died in 1985 she left the estate to her steward, Giuseppe Bianchini, and his children Paolo and Lucia have since built it into one of the most respected names in Brunello.
Pianrosso is the estate’s flagship single vineyard and is bottled as its own Brunello. The 2010 is pure Sangiovese aged about three years in large Slavonian oak casks, from a vintage now regarded as one of the finest in modern Montalcino history. Lilac, dark cherry, sandalwood, spice and leather sit over fine, firm tannins, and the magnum format should carry it gracefully for many years.
