Galloni recalls first tasting the 2002 with then-chef de cave Richard Geoffroy at Hautvillers, in a flight alongside earlier releases: the bouquet was immediately stunning for its audacity, unlike anything he had tasted. 2002 was a year of extreme ripeness in the Chardonnays, and that opulence has always been central to the wine’s profile. What strikes him most today is its timelessness — the youthful opulence remains, yet the wine is still vibrant and “almost shocking in its freshness.” Apricot, ripe peach, tangerine oil, butter and dried flowers build to a captivating crescendo that saturates the finish. Another two decades of exceptional drinking ahead.

2002 ranks alongside 2008 among the best vintages of the decade. The vintage juxtaposes restraint and latent generosity above all — a wonderful enigma in every way. Ironically it was well-timed rainfall at the end of August that sealed the deal. Geoffroy describes it as “Montrachet with a little added CO2.”

Wonderful elegance and balance, with cooked apple, lemon and hints of white pepper and salt. Medium-bodied, with really fine bubbles, closing spicy. Wonderfully fresh, linear and long — racy and elegant, a Dom Pérignon that invites drinking right now. All about finesse, with tension too, precise phenolics and bright acidity on the back palate. Subtle energy.

Intensely floral at first, with perfumed jasmine dominating the bouquet. With time in the glass it gains richness as the flavours turn riper and almost tropical — ripe apricot, passion fruit and peach emerge from this flashy, opulent Dom Pérignon. Disgorged July 2009. Full-on limestone-derived power, with juicy nectarine and apricot scents, candied lemon and lasting spice, all rounded into a supple shape and a subtle mist of a finish. A great vintage of Dom Pérignon, and one that will age with grace.

An extraordinarily firm, confident, intense nose, decidedly on the savoury side of Dom Pérignon. Nothing remotely sweet or fat, though as intense as a Montrachet, with a wonderful quality of mousse. Broad and long, with a hint of orange peel and great persistence. Already delivering, but with such backbone, acidity and light grip that it surely has a long life ahead. “Really reaches every hidden cell of the palate.”

Dom Pérignon takes its name from the Benedictine monk who served as cellarer at the Abbey of Hautvillers from 1668, and who spent the rest of his life pursuing what he called the best wine in the world. The modern cuvée follows one rule above all: it is made only from a single harvest, never blended across years, and only in vintages the house judges worthy. Andy Warhol was himself a devoted drinker of Dom Pérignon, and in 2010 the house paid tribute to him in a way it had never done before. Working with the Design Laboratory at Central Saint Martins and the Andy Warhol Foundation, it produced six labels across the 2000 and 2002 vintages, in vivid pop colours. It was the first time in the history of the house that the label’s colour had ever been changed.

The 2002 is one of the truly great Dom Pérignon vintages, spoken of alongside 1982, 1990 and 1996. Jancis Robinson found it extraordinarily firm, confident and intense, nothing remotely sweet or fat, with a wonderful mousse and a broad, long palate carrying a hint of orange peel and great persistence — a wine already delivering but with backbone and acidity for a long life ahead. Expect intense jasmine on the nose, gaining richness in the glass as the fruit turns riper and almost tropical: ripe apricot, passion fruit and peach, with lemon, brioche and chalk beneath.
