A splendid version from what is not considered to be a top vintage. The nose is stylistically irreproachable with no concessions to vegetal tones, presenting a bouquet that is “earthy, with rich underbrush notes, varied ripe fruit hints and floral nuances that are reminiscent of the archetypal violets.” It is silky and satisfying on the palate, with an aristocratic aftertaste of liquorice. Daniele Cernilli, May 2011

Marked by earth, iron, and savory flavors, this is a firm and classic vintage that emphasizes the Cabernet Sauvignon component within the blend. The palate exhibits solid structural grip, showing “rich aromas of chocolate, berry, and tobacco” alongside an undercurrent of rustic Tuscan minerality that carries into a long finish. James Suckling, September 1997
Cult Wines International Notes:
Marchesi Antinori stands as an unrivaled titan of Italian winemaking, boasting over six centuries and twenty-six generations of uninterrupted heritage. Situated in the heart of Chianti Classico on sun-drenched, high-altitude slopes rich in limestone, marl, and alberese rock, the historic Tignanello estate is famous for birthing a wine that fundamentally redefined modern Italian viticulture. First released in the early 1970s by Marchese Piero Antinori and legendary enologist Giacomo Tachis, Tignanello broke centuries of strict regional dogma by removing white grapes, introducing small French oak barrique aging, and blending international Cabernet into Sangiovese. For the 1994 vintage, the estate assembled its classic composition featuring 80% Sangiovese alongside 15% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc.
The 1994 growing season across central Tuscany was a high-stakes, heat-driven campaign that required careful vineyard management. An exceptionally warm spring triggered early budbreak and flowering, setting the stage for a summer marked by intense heat and prolonged drought conditions. Fortunately, late August and early September brought much-needed rain, offering relief to the vines and allowing the grapes to regain balance before harvest. Thanks to the well-draining, rocky soils and elevated position of the Tignanello vineyard, the vines shed excess moisture quickly, allowing for the manual harvest of healthy, phenolics-rich fruit. In the cellar, the grapes were fermented in stainless steel tanks before maturing for roughly 14 to 16 months in French and Hungarian oak barriques, followed by extended bottle rest prior to release.
At over thirty years of bottle age, the 1994 Marchesi Antinori Tignanello has reached a beautifully fully mature, harmonious drinking window. The primary fruit elements have softened into an intriguing, tertiary array of sweet dried cherries, cocoa powder, leather, forest floor, and subtle tobacco leaf. On the palate, the tannins have smoothed out completely into a fine-grained, velvety texture, nicely framed by a persistent thread of savory minerality and classic Tuscan acidity. This mature, elegant bottle offers a deeply satisfying and rewarding experience for collectors looking to taste a rare, fully integrated chapter of Super Tuscan history.
