Ratings & Tasting Notes:
94 points — Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
Riper than the 2010 yet with higher acidity and a touch more power. Red and black fruit with minty accents lead to a dense palate with precise acidity and ripe, sweet tannins that point to good aging. The reviewer judged it the best palate of the 2010 to 2012 trio, from a short vintage of about 45,000 bottles.
94 points — Wine Enthusiast
Earthy aromas of blackberry, mint, coffee and forest floor lead to a voluminous, dense and chewy palate of blackberry and chocolate.
93 points — Wine Spectator
Ripe, balanced and powerful, with roasted plum, dark cherry and Asian spice, plush and juicy at the core, finishing with creamy dark chocolate.
Cult Wines International Notes:
Cheval des Andes was founded in 1999 as a joint venture between Château Cheval Blanc, the revered Saint-Émilion Premier Grand Cru Classé, and Terrazas de los Andes, Moët Hennessy’s estate in Mendoza. The ambition was a Bordeaux-inspired grand vin from Argentina’s finest terroir, and the estate’s vineyard in Las Compuertas, in the Andean foothills of Luján de Cuyo, delivers just that: old-vine Malbec at the heart of a blend completed by Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot, overseen by Cheval Blanc’s Pierre Lurton.
The 2011 is a blend of 71% Malbec, 22% Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot, raised with a lighter hand on new oak. It was a short vintage of only around 45,000 bottles, and critics praised its combination of ripeness, fresh acidity and power, with red and black fruit, mint, coffee and dark chocolate over ripe, sweet tannins. Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate and Wine Enthusiast both awarded 94 points. With over a decade in bottle, it is a fully mature expression of Argentina’s most celebrated collaboration.
